What to Expect During the hCG Maintenance Phase


The third phase of the hCG Diet is known as the hCG maintenance plan. Once you reach this phase you have gone through the initial two days of feasting on all the fatty foods you love and have successfully completed at least three weeks on the more restrictive phase two. Now it is time to hold your weight steady for a few weeks so your body resets its “set point.”

Your set point is the weight where your body naturally wants to balance. Many obese people struggle to take off the excess weight because their set point has been adjusted too high and their body doesn’t want to go below that point. The first two phases of the hCG Diet lower your weight significantly but you need the hCG maintenance phase to readjust and set in a lower set point.

Following are some things to keep in mind when going through this phase of the plan:

1. You have to go through the hCG maintenance phase after day 45 on the diet, even if you have not reached your goal weight. You need to lock in the lower set point based on your lowest weight achieved at the end of phase two. You can then repeat phases one and two to lose more of the weight. If you need a third round, you will need to go through the maintenance phase once again.

2. You do not need to restrict yourself to 500 calories during the third phase. You are no longer taking the hCG supplements which means you need to eat more calories to fuel your body. Aim for about 2,000 calories a day or possibly more if you are exercising or live a very active lifestyle that requires high calorie burn.

3. You must avoid all sugars during the hCG maintenance phase. This includes not only products that list sugar as an ingredient, but foods that include high fructose corn syrup and other terms that basically mean sugars. If you eat sugar you will have a much harder time maintaining your weight loss and will sabotage your efforts at lowering your body’s set point.

4. Starches are off limits during the hCG maintenance phase. You can eat whatever you want, but anything that is starchy has to go. This includes corn and other starches that you would otherwise consider healthy.

5. It doesn’t matter how much fat you consume during this phase or what time of day you take in your meals. You can forget about the gimmicks of other diet plans or things you have heard on Oprah while using the hCG Diet. Eat freely as long as starches and sugars are avoided at all costs.

6. Weighing in on the same scale every single morning is absolutely critical to this phase of the plan. You need to weigh in every morning right after you get out of bed and have gone to the restroom. You cannot eat anything or drink anything prior to doing this weigh in. You want to maintain your weight from the ending of phase two with only a two pound gain or loss allowed.

It is important to recognize that the hCG maintenance phase is not about losing weight. It is about maintaining one steady weight for at least three weeks. This is how your set point gets lowered so your body wants to hover at this lower weight rather than its higher set point.
